Gorilla trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is the highlight of all visits done in East Africa.  certainly, mountain gorillas are the major reason why very many people visit Uganda, Rwanda and Congo.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is defined as a hike to the tropical forests of Africa to see the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This is mostly done in tropical forests of southwestern Uganda, areas of Rwanda, and Congo. However, Uganda has the majority number of mountain gorillas all over the world.

The perfect period to see the Mountain Gorillas in Africa

Gorilla trekking can be done throughout the year in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. Though the best period to go for gorilla trekking is during the months of June, July, August, September, and December. There are less rains and the parks are dry, making it easy to hike and see the gorillas in their natural habitat. In Bwindi, the average temperature throughout the year is 11°C/52°F in the morning and 23°C/73°F in the afternoon.

January and February: This is a low season implying less crowds and you get easy access to the gorillas. And during these months, there is very little or no rain.

March, April, and May: The rains are a lot during these months. Most challenging during the trek, the slopes are slippery.

June, July & August: This is a peak season, it is important to buy your permits early since they run out quickly.

There are quite a number of options where you can stay during your gorilla safari, your choice depends on how much you can afford.

Some accommodation places charge as high as, $2500 while the budget ones charge as low as $ 50 for a double room. The prices vary depending on the facilities, location, food, services and so much more.

 

Where Can I See Gorillas In Africa?

Gorillas can be seen in East Africa, particularly in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. However, there are mountain gorillas and the lowland gorillas with a couple of other sub-species in that. Uganda and Rwanda have mountain gorillas while Congo has lowland gorillas. It is also possible to find mountain gorillas within the DR of Congo however due to the instabilities within the country, it has been challenging in some areas. In comparison, the lowland gorillas are smaller and have brownish-gray far coats with a distinct brow ridge, while the mountain gorillas are larger with darker black coats. The Mountain gorillas are listed among the endangered primates in the entire world, but thanks to wildlife and other conservation bodies for the unceasing effort put into the protection of mountain gorillas which has yielded increasing numbers of the gorillas. The population in the past years has increased from 620  to 1080 individuals currently worldwide.

 

Where to trek gorillas in Uganda?

There are two main national parks for gorilla trekking in Uganda namely, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Gorillas live in groups/ families which are known as troops, there are 20 gorilla groups in Uganda but you can only trek one group a day.

19 gorilla groups are in Bwindi Impenetrable National park and the other group is in Mgahinga Gorilla National park. This makes Bwindi the best place to trek gorillas because it has a variety.

Mgahinga Park has the Nyakagezi group which is surrounded by the Slopes of Virunga Volcanoes, Mt. Muhavura(4,127m) Mt Gahinga (3474m) Mt. Sabinyo(3645m).

 

Gorilla Tracking Rules For Post Covid Visitors

Gorillas share 98% of the human DNA, it is possible for gorillas to contract coronavirus which can be a big threat to the survival of the gorillas. Here are the key things you should do.

. Observe a distance of 7 meters away from the gorillas.

. Age limit of 15 years or more stands.

. You are allowed only 1 hour to see the habituated gorillas.

. You must wear your mask.

. Avoid sneezing.

. Sanitize and observe other SOP guidelines.

 

What to Expect On a Gorilla Safari

On the day of your trek, you meet up with your safari guide early enough and transfer to the briefing point by 7:30 am. After the briefing, tourists will be allocated different tracking routes. You will then head to the forest accompanied by guides and rangers as you begin the search for gorillas.

While in the forest, expect to see monkey species, butterfly species, mammals and so much more. Sometimes the trek is challenging and usually requires a good level of fitness. When you see the gorillas, you can take photos with your camera or Phone but avoid flashlights because they might trigger the gorillas. You will be allowed to spend between 40 minutes to 1 hour in the company of these giants. It will be such a rewarding experience. After the trek, you head back to the headquarter for your gorilla trekking certificate.
